Laura Favin
Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator
Raised in Montgomery County, MD, Laura has long loved animals, outdoor
sports, and hiking. After graduating from James Madison University in May
2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Laura considered serving
her community as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. As soon as she came across
Great Strides in her AmeriCorps research, she knew unquestionably that this
was her calling. Laura had the opportunity to participate with the staff of
Great Strides in an EPONA training workshop, where she learned about the
field of Equine Facilitated Learning and Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy
and discovered first hand, the healing power of the horse. After interacting with the Great Strides herd, she is a horse lover for life and is very enthusiastic and excited to be involved in such an innovative and
rejuvenating mental health field and way of life.
Laura has an extensive work and volunteer background with children and
teenagers; including working with young adults with severe mental and
physical disabilities, instructing at a day care center, and volunteering in the office and community of the non-profit organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County.
She continues to be amazed and grateful for the healing and self-discovery
Great Strides provides not only among the clients, but also among the
volunteers, the staff, and anyone who steps foot on the farm. Therefore, she is deeply committed and thrilled about her mission as an AmeriCorps VISTA member to expand Great Strides services throughout the community as well as expand and manage the active volunteer program.
